As part of the global ‘Clean up the World’ initiative, this weekend the local people of tiny Komandoo, in the Shaviyani Atoll, have been putting into practice big ideas!

An initiative of Volunteer Maldives, as part of the  ‘Global Clean- up Campaign’, an impressive turnout of 350 people, including the Volunteer Maldives Volunteer, Tala, arrived at the harbor early in the morning to start the clean-up operation!

Volunteer Tala, who is helping out in the pre-school on the island for three months and has proven herself to be of huge benefit to the kids’ English teaching already, was very enthusiastic to get stuck in and help clear the litter. With all Eco issues close to her heart, she really wanted to do more to help and has some great ideas, but as we all know, the country’s’ Waste Management is a nationwide issue that needs to be addressed on a large scale, but starting with baby steps, regular island clean ups are definitely a step in the right direction to raise awareness and education.

This event marks the first step of a long journey of commitment from Volunteer Maldives, working in collaboration with its growing list of local island partners, such as Komandoo, to clean up the islands, and raise funds to help implement other sustainable ideas to maintain this initiative, such as setting up composting systems and eliminating plastic bags from the islands.
