Teaching

From North to South, all these tiny islands in the Maldives welcome with open arms their volunteer English teachers!  Whilst English is the country’s second language, and is widely used in business, still there is much help needed in the classroom with the subject. Many of the teachers working in the schools are actually expats from India or Sri Lanka, and relatively fewer Maldivians, who have not had an adequate amount of training.

Qualified teachers and teachers of TEFL and ESOL are very welcome to give a boost during the academic year, which runs from early January to November each year.

The focus is mainly on Primary grades, to give the children a firm foundation in the language, and can then progress more confidently from then on.  The teaching methods are somewhat old fashioned in that the classes are rarely interactive, and children mainly learn by copying and memorizing!  We’ve had some truly inspirational teaching volunteers over the last couple of years who brought such a buzz to the classrooms, and gave the existing teachers lots of new ideas to keep children’s interest and attention – thus adding an extra spark to the teachers’ work also!

Qualified teachers can expect to be given their own classes to teach, and most probably get involved with Teacher’s Professional Development and other workshops – once the islands have you there, you’ll find your talents put to good use!
