University Student Group Placements

As a unique experience and invaluable life lesson, programs for groups of university students can be arranged and tailored to individual requirements where necessary.
As the islands are small, up to 10 students can be placed on one island for a period from 3 – 6 weeks usually.
Most programmes will involve a variety of community development programs, with a focus on education, as the island schools are normally the main community hub on the islands!
A lot of work goes into the preparation of these programs to ensure both the local community and the students’ benefit from the experience. Participation can be included in English Teaching, Pre-school education, beach clean-ups, reef clearing, agricultural projects, swimming lessons for children and adults, and we can look at any specialised skills students may have that will greatly help the local communities.

A good proportion of the Student’s placement fees go directly back into the community island hosting them.
Recently we had a fabulous group of BUiLD students from the University of Technology, Sydney, who spent three wonderful weeks on the little island of Komandoo in the northern Shaviyani Atoll. They participated in many activities, including teaching, agriculture, swimming lessons, football and netball tournaments, beach clean-ups, specialist subject teaching, hydroponics and tree planting.
We were thrilled to be able to provide the islanders with a new hydroponics system, trees for planting on a nearby sand island, trophies for an inspiring environmental poster competition, and a permanent beach sign reminding everyone to keep the islands clean and pristine as nature intended!
