Maldives Artists’ Residency Scheme

National Art Gallery, Maldives has been planning a series of artist residencies between Maldivian and international artists. The aim and objective of these residencies are firstly, to support Maldivian and International artists through the facilitation of an environment conducive to creativity, and secondly to facilitate the exposure of Maldivian culture, environment and geography through the work of artists to specific target audiences including art and culture enthusiasts, academics, art collectors, museums and galleries as well as tourists and potential travelers to the country.

The aim is also to align the promotion of Maldivian artists and visual culture with that of the promotion of tourism.

The concept of the residency.

Artists’ Residencies are now an established practice for individuals and institutions working in the area of fine arts. Artist Residencies are increasingly seen as an important means to facilitate exposure and networking opportunities for artists from different backgrounds. Additionally, Artists’ Residencies are also increasingly gaining currency as a mechanism to promote specific cultures and assist in cultural exchange. The residency scheme is envisaged in a way that it can also act as a vehicle to promote Maldives as a tourist destination through engaging artists and institutions of international repute to promote;

  • Work produced in, and work that depicts different aspects of Maldivian culture and traditions, geography and environment, etc.
  • Work produced by Maldivian artists, etc.

Please contact us if you are an artist of any discipline who would like to apply for a residency here in the Maldives. Volunteer Maldives will work with your application together with the Arts Council and tourism outlets, who will act as sponsors in order to secure your placement.
